Happy Veteran’s Day
Tomorrow is Veteran’s Day! Though we all enjoy the day home from school and for some of us work, this day is to remember those who gave their time, courage and for some their lives to keep our freedom, to protect our families, and to serve our country. It is a time we can say, we see you, we notice you, and we thank you!
This week we made two crafts to honor our veterans. You likely all saw the flags that came home! These were so awesome! Each one was so different and special. I went to take a sample picture and I just couldn’t pick. They were all so beautiful and unique, so I had to take a picture of all of them.
The other craft we made, I learned about from a parent a couple years ago. I had no idea, but the poppy symbolizes “remembrance” for our veterans. We each made a tear art picture of a red poppy. On the back is a famous poem that goes with the meaning behind this poppy of remembrance. These are hanging on our back wall and will go home soon! So beautiful!
Bonus learning!!! Each of these crafts required different skills. The poppy was “tear art.” The students had to tear paper to get the petals. Tear art required fine motor skills and is different than ripping. It was a new skill at first but most who were worried overcame! The flag had unique stars you had to roll around your pencil. This was a true challenge! Most the class struggled at first. They kept on trying. There were 3-4 students that really had a tough time figuring out how to roll the paper on their pencil…but without frustration or negative emotion they tried and tried again and they got it! I was especially proud of this perseverance! The effort and determination to keep trying repeatedly is the exact mindset we all work for in this life! So proud of this class! Know these pieces were made with love and lots of effort!
Book Fair
This week we visited the book fair. The students were able to walk around and look at all the books. Some students bought books and others enjoyed seeing the options. The book fair is open this whole week before and after school (except Friday …it closes down at 10:30). On Grandparents Day, students will be able to go over with their grandparents for a visit after our time in class together (and then return to class).
Canned Food Drive
Our annual school Canned Food Drive has arrived! We are collecting any cans you have in your home that you could send to donate to our school food drive. The food will then be given to the San Diego Food Bank.
The week we return from break we will be collecting grains, pasta and legumes in personalized sandwich bags as our first class act of generosity. I deliver these with my family and some friends to those in Mexico with many needs. More information will come on this giving project over the break! Stay tuned!
Conferences
Thank you so much for all the families that came out to conference and for those who are scheduled to come this week! It is so nice to spend time with each of you and getting to spend the whole time telling about your child and who they are in Room 206. I know for many of you, your child may act a little different in class than at home, so its fun to swap stories and share all their effort and progress! I’m loving this class and though I’ve said it many times, I love that each of their personalities bring a unique and important piece to our 206 family!
PINK Contest
This week, since our color of week is not so common for some of our 206 friends, each class has their own pink contest. A small prize is given for the boy and for the girl wearing the most pink. This can be challenging and a fun contest. Get creative and have fun! For some kids this will require courage…remind them that we are all trying to wear pink this day!
We purposely choose pink this week to honor the 3 Day walk and especially to remember and love those individuals and their families who have faced breast cancer. In some years, our whole school will participate in this pink day! Thank you for wearing pink and have fun with it!
